In fact, we (over here in Montreal/Magog) had not heard of this terrible news until I was on the internet tonight trying to locate your Mother. As a result of my search, I came across her obituary as well as your website. Note that I last spoke to Mother in 2009 when I was researching the story of Sherman (Harold) Peabody’s disappearance on July 29th, 1944 when his Lancaster was shot down over France. At that time (2009), I called your Mother to connect her with the last living survivor of this crash: a man named R.L. Fiddick who was the navigator on this flight. As it turned out, Mr. Fiddick lived less than 2.5 kilometers from where your Mother lived on Beach Drive. She then went down to meet with Mr. Fiddick and they apparently had a good discussion. Unfortunately, I never did re-connect with your Mother and seriously regret this fact. Just to put me and my brother Robert (copied on this email) into a family context: we are the sons (1960 and 1959 respectively) of Fleda (Bunny) Peck. By the way, your Mom was a bridesmaid at my parents wedding in 1940. Sherman was also an usher at the same event. Her mother was Mary Hamilton Peabody who was born in Mansonville in 1896 and who’s father was James Albert Peabody. Our Mom passed away in 2006 at the age of 89 years. Cousins of my grandmother and Mother were Harold and Earl Peabody whom Robert and I knew well. Earl’s cottage was right next door to that of my grandmothers on Lake Memphremagog. In fact, I currently live on the cottage property since building a new house on the land in 2000. Earl’s old cedar log cottage is still intact and owned by the daughter of a well known Quebec artist (Edmund Alleyn). They have taken excellent care of the place since Gordon Peabody sold it to them in 1976. I also recollect your Mom coming down to Magog at least 10+ years ago. She knocked on my door as she had hoped to go and visit Earl’s old place. I took her over and introduced her to the Alleyns who gave her a tour. I think she was quite pleased… Anyway, long story short is that Robert and I wanted to reach out to you to pass on our condolences for the recent passing of your Mother. Secondly we would hope that if you are planning any commemorative service for her back here in Quebec this summer, we would like to attend if this is acceptable to you and provided the timing works for us. Otherwise it would simply be good to be connected to you as we do have common family roots via the Peabody clan. In fact, I saw the information on the Peabody family history (and a few shots of Sherman) on your website. I also was very interested to learn about the Richardson clan via the information you have posted. As well, Robert and I would also like to share with you some other very interesting facts that we have uncovered on Sherman. We are currently sponsoring two graduate students in the Department of History at Bishops University to look into the mystery underlining Sherman’s “disappearance”. As we have uncovered, Sherman did not die in the actual plane crash. He successfully parachuted out with his co-pilot, was captured but was then executed by a German patrol within the next 24 hours after being shot down. Fiddick was able to get taken in by the French resistance and made it back to England. Anyway, there is much more to the story than I can outline within this email. Note that when I called your Mother in 2009, it was to reveal to her that Sherman had been shot versus the story we always heard as kids: that he simply was never found… I hope that what I have outlined above is of interest to you and we get connected in the next few days. Again, our most sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of your Mom. She is the last of a very unique generation… Best regards, Jon and Robert Peck Kench, Lillian B. The Globe and Mail, 2007-03-14 Whatever Happened to Sherman Peabody?  Bishop’s, Nazis and a Strange Disappearance Sherman Peabody of Sherbrooke was on the Bishop’s golf and hockey teams and a popular man on campus when World War II broke out.  Leaving the school without finishing his degree, he became an RCAF Flying Officer and the pilot of a Lancaster heavy bomber. On July 28, 1944 while taking part in a raid on Stuttgart, his plane was shot down over eastern France by a German night fighter.  Two managed to parachute out, and three bodies were recovered at the crash site.  That leaves two unaccounted for… In 2016 the family of Sherman Peabody commissioned the History Department to find out the truth about his fate and that of his fellow crew member Flying Officer Doe.  Over the past academic year three of our intrepid students have followed the trail of Sherman Peabody from the Old Library in McGreer, to National Archives in Ottawa, to the Public Record Office in London, to Cirey (pop. 48) in the Vosges Mountains of France.  Their story connects a Bishop’s University student to Bomber Command, the French Resistance, SAS, the Gestapo’s war crimes…   and to a small French village where the wartime crash of an RCAF plane still reverberates today. On Tuesday, April 11 at 2.15 in Cleghorn Room Megan Whitworth and Sean Summerfield, two graduating History students, will be presenting their findings on the mystery of Sherman Peabody’s disappearance through a slide show and talk.  ALL are welcome to attend. The Globe and Mail, Another member of the Peabody family who has made a place for himself in Canadian life through his affiliation with the Canada Life Assurance Company is Earle Boright Peabody younger brother of Harold Albert Peabody. He was born at Mansonville Quebec, September 25. 1893. and received his early education at Academy and Bugbee Business College, Stanstead, Quebec. He was then appointed immigration official by the Federal Government and was stationed at High Water, Quebec. For thirteen years he successfully that position; but at the end of that period, he resigned to accept a post with the Canada Life Assurance Company, with which he acted as a representative under brother. Conklin Volume 5 The Dominion Publishing Company, Limited Toronto 1932 Harold Sherman Peabody Whatever Happened to Sherman Peabody?  Bishop’s, Nazis and a Strange Disappearance Sherman Peabody of Sherbrooke was on the Bishop’s golf and hockey teams and a popular man on campus when World War II broke out.  Leaving the school without finishing his degree, he became an RCAF Flying Officer and the pilot of a Lancaster heavy bomber. On July 28, 1944, while taking part in a raid on Stuttgart, his plane was shot down over eastern France by a German night fighter.  Two managed to parachute out, and three bodies were recovered at the crash site.  That leaves two unaccounted for… In 2016 the family of Sherman Peabody commissioned the History Department to find out the truth about his fate and that of his fellow crew member Flying Officer Doe.  Over the past academic year, three of our intrepid students have followed the trail of Sherman Peabody from the Old Library in McGreer, to National Archives in Ottawa, to the Public Record Office in London, to Cirey (pop. 48) in the Vosges Mountains of France.  Their story connects a Bishop’s University student to Bomber Command, the French Resistance, SAS, the Gestapo’s war crimes…   and to a small French village where the wartime crash of a RCAF plane still reverberates today. Over 100 attended including Dr. Michael Childs and Principal Michael Goldbloom. Bishop’s University Remembers Sherman Peabody Bishop’s University students shed new light on 73-year family mystery Harold Sherman Peabody, a pilot during WW II, left Eastern Townships in 1941 and never returned home Alison Brunette · CBC News April 16, 2017 Harold Sherman Peabody, a pilot during WW II, was not on the plane when it was shot down by a German night-figher in 1944. It’s believed he was captured and brought to a concentration camp in France. (National Archives Canada) After 76 years since Harold Sherman Peabody left the Eastern Townships to join the military, his family members are starting to get some answers as to what may have happened to him. Peabody, a science student at Bishop’s University in the late 1930s, joined the ranks of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. The pilot never returned home to Sherbrooke, Que., and until recently, his family never knew what happened to him as they to all went to their graves. “This was one of those mysteries in our family that we never really pursued,” said Robert Peck, whose mother was Peabody’s second cousin. “As young boys, we used to visit the home of Sherman’s parents, and it was like a shrine,” said Peck. “His mother and father would say, ‘Maybe he’ll come home one day.’…And I think they kept that hope alive.” Robert Peck and his brother, Jonathan Peck, enlisted the help of a group of students at Bishop’s University and funded the research to find out what actually happened to their late family member. Peabody survived plane crash. Some had eye-witness accounts of the plane crash.”What we found was that Peabody was actually not on the plane when it crashed…According to the reports of what was found at the crash, the state of the plane…some open army rations were found east of the plane crash and these rations could not have been opened by other survivors as they had injuries which prevented them from walking long distances,” Whitworth explained.Captured by the GermansWhitworth said the researchers found reports of allied airmen in that part of France in German army records.”We think they were maybe picked up by the Germans and may be brought to Struthof, which was a concentration camp in Azas, France…but it’s very hard to have 100 percent certainty of what happened,””We think they were maybe picked up by the Germans and may be brought to Struthof, which was a concentration camp in Azas, France…but it’s very hard to have 100 percent certainty of what happened,” Whitworth said. Harold Sherman Peabody the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Peabody of Portland Street Sherbrooke. At 22 years of age, Pilot Officer Peabody was educated at Sherbrooke High School and at Bishop’s University in the late 1930s. He was especially active and prominent in sports during his school and college days. Hew was outstanding in golf and was the holder of both the junior and senior championships of the Eastern Townships. Prior to listing in the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was assistant armament instructor at the Windsor Mills Airport. He enlisted in Active Service on November 20, 1941, and was first stationed at the Brandon Manning Depot, later going to the Initial Training School at Toronto; afterwards proceeding to the Elementary Flying School at St. Catherines, Ont., and lastly to Yorkton, Sask., form which school he was graduated and received his wings in December 1942 and promptly promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer. Family grateful for findings Robert Peck said he and his brother Jonathan Peck were very moved to hear about the group’s findings. ”We would have liked to have found his remains, where we could have ensured he was buried with military honors and so on,” said Robert Peck. The brothers say they plan to go to France to thank the villagers for their collaboration in the project, and specifically to thank one 94-year-old woman who’s been tending the graves of the men of Peabody’s crew who died or disappeared when their plane crashed. ”We kind of went from the hypothesis that maybe he’d hit his head, was in a hospital somewhere in Europe, didn’t remember who he was,” said Meagan Whitworth, one of the students involved in the project. Flying Officer Harold Sherman Peabody Burial: Runnymede Memorial Englefield Green Runnymede Borough Surrey, England Plot: Panel 247. The plane did not explode. Eyewitness accounts talk about what happened to Peabody? The plane is on fire, but no explosion was reported. Bombs were found still intact in the plane and detonated later by the Germans.Only three bodies found at crash site. Guns also found near the crash site.Peabody jumping before the head of the French Resistance (the Maquis) in the region, Réné Ricatte (also known by his alias of Jean Serge), writes in his book”Viombois”, that he was informed that the Germans had captured and shot two allied airmen but that a third had escaped, presumably Fiddick. However, his source is never named. In a letter addressed to Father Rohr, who was the priest in Cirey-sur•Vézouze and interpreter for Fiddick, it is written that according to what Fiddick told the letter writer, Peabody, Doe and Wishart had all jumped from the plane before him. This letter is not signed so we do not know its origin. M. Niss, Who helped Fiddick escape, remembers helping two allied airmen bury their parachutes that night. The hypothesis that Peabody did not die in the plane crash during the night of 28th of July 1944. Although nothing can be confirmed completely, the evidence of rations, eyewitness accounts, and memoirs point towards him not being in the plane when it crash landed near pot-de-Vin. Madame Madeleine Schultz: This angel rises above all the horror of all this. Madame Madeleine has been putting flowers on the crash site and the memorials in the cemetery in Petitmont daily since the plane crashed.  I will keep a special place in my heart for this dear women always as she is 95! Marie-Isaure Sainte-Onge (daughter of Jean-Marie St-Onge(Payant) and Louise Ouellet) was born on 02 Jan 1845 in Cacouna, Temiscouata, Quebec, Canada. Notes for Georges Hudon Beaulieu: George (aka Georges) Beaulieu married a widow who had a child, Clara Vaillancourt, b. 1868, from her first marriage. Together they had five children, three daughters, Clodia, Arthemise and Marie-Louise (called Blanche) younger than Arthemise–; two sons George and Emile. Father George was a convert to Protestantism, probably Presbyterianism. In the 1881and 1891 Censuses, the family is registered as Catholic. In the 1901 Census, the family were registered as Protestants. According to family tradition, Isaure and her child, and possibly some of the other children, were catholic, and thus there was a great deal of discord in the family. Arthemise, and Marie-Louise (called Blanche) were persecuted by the older children. My cousin, Joy Hibsher, Thelma’s daughter, writes: “I was told by both grandmother and mother that our grandmother Arthemise had a miserable life, and was sent away at the age of 16 to study nursing or become a nurse’s aide, or something.” [In 1899, Arthemise was 16, and if she was sent to Montreal as my mother reported to study nursing, she could have met our grandfather Theophile Laurin who was studying in the medical faculty of Bishop’s Univ. at that time.] Joy continues, “It seems that the mother favored the Catholic children over the two younger ones, who were protestant. The father, in an attempt to protect the two small girls from ridicule and abuse, favored them! I was told that the marriage became very unhappy, and the home was like two armed camps–one Protestant, the other Catholic.” Edna Laurin Hughes, my mother, spoke of summer visits to her maternal grandfather on his farm on or near the Gaspe, and Cacouna is on the edge of the Gaspe. George Beaulieu was a farmer, “un cultivateur.” George had become a Protestant; his wife was a Catholic. This produced enormous friction in the family: Arthemise and Blanche were brought up as Protestants, as Presbyterians. My cousin remembers Arthemise telling her that her father used to read the Presbyterian bible to them as children. There was a Presbyterian Church in Cacouna, St. Andrew’s, closed in the 1950’s. 1881 Census:Notice that George’s wife’s name is spelled differently; the clerk taking down the information probably wrote what he/she heard. The religion may have just been done automatically as RC because there were very few protestants in Cacouna. My grandmother Arthemise left home at 15 or 16, as family tradition has it, and was sent to study nursing in Montreal; therefore she would not have appeared in the 1901 Census; perhaps she took Marie-Louise aka Blanche with her to escape the contentious home aatmosphere. The family tradition is that she left home to escape the constant harassment of her Catholic relations. She met and married into a somewhat prominent Montreal Presbyterian family, the Laurins. Her husband, Theophile Laurin, MD studied medicine in Baltimore, MD, and at Bishops College in Montreal. Perhaps Arthemise met him when she was studying nursing. Arthemise and Theophile settled in Lowell, Mass., where he practiced medicine until his death in April 10, 1943. (1) Blanche Beaulieu aka Marie-Louise Peck. She was a great favorite of Arthemise, and when she visited Arthemise, Arthemise’s family loved her. After Arthemise was widowed, Blanche visited her fairly frequently over the years. Blanche was married and lived in Canada, probably Montreal. (2) I recently found in box of Memorabilia a copy of an obituary announcement in the Montreal Star (see enclosure) which must have appeared in May 1968, when Arthemise died in the U.S. A dear sister, Marie Louise Peck, is mentioned there. Marie-Louise appears in the 1891 Cacouna Census in our Beaulieu family. This must be Tante Blanche. (3) A photograph of Arthemise just before her death-May 23, 1968, with a younger woman who looks like her, no doubt Blanche. Records I have searched: 1901 Canadian Census; 1881 Canadian Census for the Laurins and Beaulieus; the 1891 Census for the Beaulieus. I purchased a copy of the marriage certificate of Arthemise and Theophile. See Arthemise Beaulieu below. Sources I have searched: Mormon (LDS) records; Ancestry.com; genealogy .com; My trees.com. I have posted messages on the Beaulieu Family page on the internet. I am in contact with two cousins who need to search their basements for clues. George Michaud, the grandson of Georges Beaulieu, Arthemise’s brother, has contacted me and verifies all this. Notes for Marie-Isaure Sainte Onge: aka Marie-Isaure Payant dit Saintonge. Her first husband was Edouard Vaillancourt; their daughter is the Clara Vaillancourt of the 1881 census. The St-Onge in the Gaspe area are mostly Payan-dit-St-Onge, or Payan(t)-dit-Saintonge. Saintonge was never actually a surname. It was given as a “dit” to people who emigrated from the province of Saintonge in France(now the Dept. of Charente-Maritime]. The former province of Saintonge came from Latin. In the Christian tradition, there never was a Saint named Onge. People started writing it as St-Onge because it sounded like the name of a saint. Many of the emigrants from this area of France were Huguenots driven out in the 17th century. Our Marie-Isaure did not descend from one of these Huguenot families; her ancestors were Catholics, ultimately causing strife and unhappiness in our grandmother Arthemise’s family because her husband, George Beaulieu was a convert to Presbyterianism. The original Beaulieus were a Catholic family, Hudon dit Beaulieu. There is a Beaulieu village near Chemille in the Maine et Loire District of France. Clara Vaillancourt was born June 20, 1868, and died May 12, 1939. Marie-Isaure Sainte-Onge and Georges Hudon Beaulieu had the following children: i. As a young girl, she developed an intense love of outdoor recreation including skiing and swimming and became a dedicated and generous letter writer. In 1945, Shirley moved with the MacKeen family to Calgary, but maintained strong ties to her family in Eastern Canada. In the summer of 1949, she traveled across Canada to be with her ailing uncle, James Watson, beginning a lifetime of long-distance family outreach. During her early twenties, Shirley was an avid downhill skier in the Canadian Rockies, won the title of Miss Calgary, and was crowned Queen of the 1950 Banff Winter Carnival. She met and married husband Robert Eldon “Bob” Doe, and started a family with two energetic boys. In 1954, Bob’s work as a geophysicist brought the family to Houston, where in 1957 a third son was born. In 1960, the family moved to La Mirada, California, returning to Houston in 1966. As her boys grew older, she became a volunteer with the Presbyterian Church, caring for the out-of-town families of patients at Houston Medical Center. Throughout this time, Shirley was her family’s Canadian ambassador, traveling north for births, weddings, and funerals. In 1982, Shirley and Bob retired to the Gulf Coast town of Pass Christian, Mississippi. They spent the next 23 years there, teaching their grandson, Chris, to fish and sail, volunteering for the local Garden Club, initiating a community Meals-on-Wheels program, helping to establish Pass Christian as a “Tree City USA,” and providing potluck meals and spiced pecans to congregants at the Pineville Presbyterian Church. After Bob’s death in early 2005, hurricane Katrina flooded her home, and she moved to a retirement complex in The Woodlands, Texas. She immersed herself in the social fabric of this new community, joining a local Methodist church and volunteering to teach literacy to children at a nearby elementary school. Friends and extended family remember Shirley as a compassionate, self-sacrificing soul with a great sense of humor and tremendous courage, who truly cared for everyone she met. In addition to her parents and husband Bob, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved son Harold “Harry” Doe. She is survived by son Thomas Doe and daughter-in-law Kay Doe of Honoka’a, Hawaii; son Richard Doe of Los Gatos, California; grandson Christopher Doe of Grand Prairie, Texas; sister Helen Egleston of North Vancouver, British Columbia; brother James MacKeen and sister Nancy MacKeen of Calgary, Alberta; and cousins Caroline Lester and Tom Watson and cousin-in-law Bruce Robertson of Toronto, Ontario. She is also survived by four nieces, two nephews, three grandnieces, and three grandnephews scattered across Canada and Bermuda. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday May 9, 2009, in Robb Chapel at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, 77380. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers are sent to Sally K. Ride Elementary School Library Fund, 4920 W. Panther Creek Dr., The Woodlands Texas, 77381.
